VMHA Open House at Britannia Arena |
|
This free event is open to everyone so bring all your friends whether they play hockey or not. There will be live entertainment, a BBQ, information about Vancouver Minor Hockey Association (VMHA), and best of all a free skate from 1:30-3pm where anyone can come skate!!! (No hockey equipment necessary, helmets provided).
Also if you hockey gear that's too small bring it out and exchange/give it with/to someone else.
The event will be happening from 11am-until 4pm on Saturday September 4th, so come all day for family entertainment.

Criminal Record Checks |
|
VMHA requires that all its volunteers have submitted a 2010 Criminal Record Check to help ensure the safety of all our children/players.
Every volunteer will be reimbursed for the Criminal Record Check. Download the forms needed for the Criminal Record Check here. Instructions can be downloaded here.
NOTE: These steps DO NOT apply if you live outside of Vancouver. You will have to contact your local police force where if you do not live in Vancouver.
We advise that you complete the Criminal Record Check sooner rather than later since the VPD gets very busy in September, and it takes 4 WEEKS for the police to process the record check.

Safety Meeting |
|
This meeting is where people interested in Safety within hockey can attend and obtain free information on how to protect their children within the sport.
This is also where "safety" people from each team receive first aid kits for their respective teams. Feel free to come to this meeting if this is an interest of yours, or you are/ want to be a safety person.
This meeting will be on Saturday September 4th from 6:30-8:30pm.

Al Boyd Scholarship Fund |

VMHA is in the process of setting up a scholarship for our players in the memory of Al Boyd.
Al was a Life Member and long time coach in our association, starting his volunteer work with Grandview MHA prior to the amalgamation into Vancouver MHA.

While Trout Lake Community Centre undergoes renovations, our hockey box will be relocated to the Trout Lake arena building which is open Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

A Sad Note |
|
It is with great sadness to inform you of the passing of one
of our Life members, Al Boyd.
Al was very active with Grandview Minor Hockey Association, one of the associations that
amalgamated into VMHA. In fact Al was on the amalgamation committee when Grandview Minor,
Vancouver Hastings and Killarney Minor combined to become what we know today as VMHA. With
Grandview Minor, Al was President, Coach Coordinator and coached many teams and continued
to coach with VMHA.
There will be a viewing on April 5th from 6-8 pm at Hamilton Harron Funeral Home, 5390
Fraser Street. The memorial service will be on April 6th at 11:00 am at St.Judes Parish and
Shrine, 3078 Renfrew Street.
Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Petition to Fight Cuts to Gaming Revenue |
|
The Provincial Government is looking at eliminating the charitable
gaming grants. VMHA receive about $65,000 annually from our bingo grant
and if this is taken away, it works out to an increase in fees of about
$100 per player. The funds we receive from Gaming do not cover our ice
or jersey costs, but they do help with other costs.

More Honours for VMHA at BC Hockey AGM |
|
At the BC Hockey Annual General Meeting held June 19-21 in Vancouver our association was honoured with the 'The Frank Spring Award – Minor Hockey Association of the Year'. This annual award recognizes the Hockey Association "judged to have made an outstanding contribution to its community by providing a properly organized program where a youngster can learn the basic skills and the fundamentals of good hockey".
In May, we won the 'Fred Page Memorial Association Of The Year' award at the Pacific Coast AHA AGM and we can all be congratulated for making ours the best little association not only regionally, but now provincially as well!
The VMHA Board members are also thrilled to announce that our President, Rochelle Wallace, won the 'Life Members’ Award'. This is given to an amateur hockey administrator who has made an outstanding contribution to the development and growth of amateur hockey.
Rochelle is a full time teacher in the Vancouver school district and a devoted mother of two sports-minded children. Despite this she has found time to combine her Presidential duties with that of just about every position there is in minor hockey including Divisional Manager, Risk Manager, Treasurer, Ice Allocator, Coach Coordinator, and Secretary. She has participated in almost every committee, fund raiser and activity related to our association, including volunteering for our bingo and concession duties at last minute when other volunteers are unable to fulfill their commitments.
The last two years have been very challenging for Vancouver Spirit MHA; a Civic strike and Olympic upgrades left gaping holes in ice availability. Rochelle has been amazingly proactive in seeking out solutions that worked. She called on multiple resources and designed and shaped resolutions that allowed Vancouver Minor Hockey players to have ice to play on for the last two seasons and looking ahead to 2010. Indeed, despite the loss of ice, we have been able to expand our membership and expand services. Our teams have experienced significantly more success in regards to wins and losses on the ice, particularly in the 2008-09 season and Rochelle has played a pivotal role in all these successes.
For this, and all she has done for VMHA, BC Hockey rightfully granted her the award.
Congratulations Rochelle!

VMHA IS ASSOCIATION OF THE YEAR! |

On May 31, 2009 Rochelle, Brendan, Brian, Trudy and Leanne Smith attended the PCAHA AGM where VMHA was awarded the Fred Page Memorial ASSOCIATION OF THE YEAR award!
Our representatives all stood proudly to accept the award. We are hoping to get pictures from the PCAHA website.
Congrats to everyone for making ours the best little association around! |
