TRAIL, BC -- Van Minor's Peewee A1 team rallied from a 3-1 mid-game deficit to beat West Kootenay 8-4 and claim the B.C. Peewee Tier 2 bronze medal Wednesday at Cominco Arena.
Playing their sixth game in four days, VMHA trailed 3-2 heading into the third period but outscored their foes from the city of Nelson 6-1 in the third period. Andrej Kovacevic led the way with a hat trick, while Fraser Minten had two goals and two assists and Alyandro De Leon had a goal and three assists. First-year peewee Chris Talbot and Olivier Klovance rounded out the scoring.
Aidan Thomas and Markus Lam shared goaltending duties for Vancouver, which lost 6-1 to the powerhouse Burnaby Winter Club A2 team in the semifinals earlier Wednesday. The goal was the only one given up by BWC to that point in the tournament, which wound up with a championship game between BWC and West Kelowna later Wednesday.
VMHA had qualified for the provincial tournament with a 2-2 draw against BWC in the PCAHA Final 4 tournament at the Agrodome. Playing with just 12 skaters throughout the provincials, VMHA played Wednesdayagainst a BWC squad featuring five more skaters. And in the bronze final, they managed to find some extra energy in the third period against a tiring West Kootenay squad, which had three more skaters but had also played earlier in the day.
Van Minor, coached by Chris Girman and Richard Huscroft, finished with a 4-2 record at the provincials and a 38-16-5 record overall for the season.
