Al Boyd Scholarship Awarded:

VMHA president Kevin Cartwright handed out two Al Boyd Scholarship Awards at the 3rd Annual Hockey Day at VMHA on November 2.  This bursary is to be given out annually to the member who best demonstrates the qualities valued by the award’s namesake – hard work, integrity, commitment and volunteerism. The 2019 winners are Jesse Maclemand and Liam Wong.

Al Boyd was deeply invested as coach and mentor for VMHA Association. He took on many volunteer roles from team management to president, but his true passion was coaching young players. Although coaching minor hockey is predominantly about bettering hockey skills, Al always coached his players to strive to be better people.

Volunteer Refund Policy Update:

Like most minor sports organizations, we are almost entirely dependent on volunteer participation. We are proudly community-based and rely on volunteers, like you, to help make each season successful. There are many ways to lend support – be it through coaching, team management, safety roles, fundraising, tournament support or helping with community events. We couldn’t do it without you.

To better recognize the importance of volunteering and how it underlines everything we do – we’ve upped the ante on our volunteer refund policy.

Here is what you know

A refundable volunteer fee is $150 per family (not player), and requires 6 hours per season of volunteer duty. This includes duties related to the management of operations, programming, events for any specific VMHA team or VMHA sanctioned event where there has been an explicit call for volunteers. Examples include Team Manager, Safety Person, Time/Scorekeepers (ONLY) at VMHA produced special events (i.e. Tournaments).

Here is what we added

We know that there are additional “project based” volunteer functions that involve           A LOT of planning, sometimes over a short period of time. We want to recognize these efforts too. This is why we’ve created a refund scale. For qualifying volunteer projects, you can now receive the following refunds:

  •   6 hours     – $150
  •   12 hours   – $300
  •   20+ hours – $450

Details around the policy update can be found here: https://www.vmha.com/about-volunteering/ , including how you qualify. If you have additional questions, please reach out: info@vmha.com. And last of all, if you’d like to get involved and volunteer, but don’t know which opportunity is best for you – get in touch: info@vmha.com – and someone can reach out with upcoming volunteer roles.
